Alexander County Clerk & Recorder

If you plan to be married or joined by civil union in Alexander County, Illinois, you need to purchase a license from our office. Your residence is not a consideration.

Applicants must apply through the website portal to start the process.

Licenses MUST be purchased at least one day prior to being married, per state law and are valid for 60 days.

IMPORTANT: After completing the application, contact the Alexander County Clerk’s Office to SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT to receive your license. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. & 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday: 618-734-7000 opt. 1. You must call to schedule an appointment to receive your license. Both applicants must be present at the time of appointment.

If you want to have the ceremony performed by a Judge call the Alexander County Circuit Clerks Office (618-734-0107) to schedule.

The Alexander County Clerk’s office administers “Doing Business As” or “DBA” business licenses and Certificates of Ownership. All sole proprietorship and partnership businesses in Alexander County must file for a DBA license or Assumed Name.

PROCEDURE FOR FILING FOR AN ASSUMED NAME:

1. Applicants must apply, click here to apply.
2. Obtain an ‘Assumed Name Certificate of Intention’ form from our office.
3. The County Clerk’s office needs to see a valid driver’s license of State ID for identification purposes.
4. There is a $17 filing fee to be paid when you submit the ‘Assumed Name Certificate of Intention’ to our office.
5. You will be given a receipt for the $30.00 payment and two copies of the ‘Assumed Name Certificate of Intention.’
6. You will then take the receipt and the two copies to a local newspaper. It must be a newspaper that publishes at least once a week, publishes news and has a legal notice section. The notice must appear in the newspaper within 15 days from the filing with the County Clerk’s office. The notice must publish for three consecutive weeks. Payment for the publication is the responsibility of the business owner.
7. Upon completion of the three weeks of publication the newspaper will issue you a ‘Certificate of Publication’ You are responsible for contacting the newspaper and obtaining the ‘Certificate of Publication.’
8. You will then bring the ‘Certificate of Publication’ to the County Clerk’s office. Our office will then issue your ‘Certificate of Ownership’ which shows that your business is registered in Alexander County.
9. Your business should not be operating under the Assumed Name until you have received the ‘Certificate of Ownership’ from the Alexander County Clerk’s office.
10. If there are any changes in ownership or address of business, these changes need to be updated and filed in the County Clerk’s office.
